Exposed aggregate & driveways across Glen Waverley

Glen Waverley is the largest suburb we service, with more than 42,000 residents at the 2021 Census. It's also one of the busiest for property change. Homes built in the post-war boom are being renovated or replaced, larger blocks are being subdivided into townhouses, and owners who plan to stay are investing in new driveways and outdoor spaces. Rowville Concrete arranges exposed aggregate and decorative driveways, crossovers, townhouse slabs, paths and patios across Glen Waverley, about 8.5 km north-west of Rowville. Every quote is free and comes with no obligation.

How Glen Waverley grew

Glen Waverley started out as orchards and farmland. Its post office opened in 1885 under the name Black Flat and was renamed Glen Waverley in 1921; the "Waverley" comes from a Sir Walter Scott novel. The big change came between the 1950s and 1970s, when, as Wikipedia puts it, there was rapid infilling of housing "built to a generally high standard on large (typically 800 m²) blocks". Hooker Rex opened the Legend Park Estate in 1971.

That era explains a lot about the suburb's concrete today. Many homes still have driveways, paths and patios laid decades ago. Much of the housing stock is now ageing, and renewal is under way, often through subdividing the larger blocks into townhouses. Both trends create concreting work: upgrading what's there, and building new driveways, crossovers and slabs for what replaces it.

Glen Waverley's housing today

The 2021 Census shows a suburb in transition:

  • 79.1% of dwellings were separate houses.
  • 10.6% were semi-detached, terrace or townhouses, and 10.2% were flats or apartments, among the highest shares of both in our service area.
  • 49.3% of homes had four or more bedrooms.
  • 41% were owned outright, and 27.1% were rented.

Put simply, Glen Waverley has three big groups of property owners with concrete needs (our inference from the data):

  1. 1Long-term owners of original homes looking to replace tired driveways and upgrade outdoor areas.
  2. 2Developers and builders subdividing larger blocks into townhouses, who need slabs, shared driveways, crossovers and footpath reinstatement.
  3. 3Investors and landlords who need practical repairs and durable surfaces.

Exposed aggregate driveways in Glen Waverley

Exposed aggregate is one of the most requested decorative finishes in Melbourne's east, and it suits Glen Waverley homes well. After the concrete is placed, the surface paste is washed back to reveal the natural stone beneath. The result is textured, grippy and good at hiding tyre marks and minor staining. It also pairs nicely with both classic brick homes and modern townhouse facades.

Choices to make with an exposed aggregate driveway:

  • Stone blend: from light, creamy quartz blends to darker basalt-based mixes. The stone is the main thing you'll see, so look at physical samples, not just photos.
  • Concrete colour: the matrix between the stones can be natural grey or tinted, which changes the overall tone.
  • Exposure depth: a lighter or heavier exposure changes both the texture and the look.
  • Borders: a smooth, coloured or contrasting border can frame the driveway and tie it to paths.
  • Sealer: a quality sealer enriches the stone colour and helps with stain resistance. An anti-slip additive is worth considering on sloping driveways.

Because Glen Waverley's terrain ranges from flats near Dandenong Creek to hillier ground towards Scotchmans Creek, some driveways are close to flat and others have a noticeable grade. On sloping driveways, exposed aggregate's texture is a practical advantage. Exposed aggregate driveways → · Decorative concrete →

Replacing an original driveway

For a driveway laid decades ago, we'll first check whether it's worth saving. If the slab is sound, crack repairs, resurfacing or sealing may be enough. If it's broken up, sunken, or lifted by tree roots, replacement is usually the better investment. A typical replacement involves:

  1. 1Permit check: if the crossover is included, a Monash Vehicle Crossing Permit is arranged first (details below).
  2. 2Saw-cut and break-out: a clean cut where the new work meets the garage, paths or a neighbour's driveway, then removal of the old slab.
  3. 3Subgrade and base: soft or root-affected material is removed, and a crushed-rock base is compacted.
  4. 4Formwork and steel: set to levels and falls, with reinforcement on chairs.
  5. 5Pour and finish: exposed aggregate, coloured, stencil or plain finish.
  6. 6Joints, curing and sealing: control joints cut on time, and the new slab cured, then sealed when ready.

Townhouse developments: slabs, shared driveways and crossovers

With so many of Glen Waverley's larger blocks being subdivided, a big part of the suburb's concrete work is for small developments. We can package:

For builders, we work from drawings and specifications, allow for steel inspections, and schedule driveways late in the build so heavy construction traffic doesn't damage new concrete.

Monash Council's vehicle crossing process

Glen Waverley is the seat of the City of Monash, and Monash's vehicle crossing rules apply to every new, altered or removed crossing in the suburb. The permit is separate from any building or planning permit, a point that sometimes catches out developers who assume their planning approval covers it.

Design rules:

  • One vehicle crossing per residential property.
  • Standard width 3 metres; maximum 3.5 metres.
  • At least 9 metres from a street corner.
  • At least 1 metre from street furniture.
  • Excavation at least 4 metres from the base of a street tree.
  • A crossing within 2.4 metres of an adjoining crossing becomes a double crossing. That's especially relevant for side-by-side townhouses.

Application:

  • A site plan and at least five photos of the frontage.
  • Monash recommends a traffic management plan and public liability insurance.
  • Assessment can take up to 10 working days.
  • The permit expires six months after it's issued, so timing matters on developments with long programs.

Inspections:

  • After excavation and before the pour, a pre-pour inspection is required. It's booked by phone before 2 pm on the working day before, and inspections take place on weekday mornings.
  • About a month after the pour, Monash re-inspects. The council notes that concrete takes about one month to reach almost full strength.

We build these steps into the schedule so the crew isn't standing around waiting for an inspection on pour day. Full details are on the Monash vehicle crossing page.

Patios, paths and outdoor living

Original homes on generous blocks often have plenty of room out the back, and many owners are upgrading tired pavers or old timber decks. Popular projects include:

Street trees, services and tight frontages

Glen Waverley's established streets often come with mature street trees, pits, poles and hydrants near the kerb. Monash's 4-metre tree excavation clearance and 1-metre street furniture clearance can shape where a crossing goes. Narrower subdivided frontages leave little room for error. Before we design a driveway or crossover, we measure these assets and check the frontage against the rules, so your plans are realistic from the start.

Pour-day logistics on busy streets

Streets near The Glen, Kingsway, the station and schools can be busy, with plenty of parked cars. On pour day, a concrete truck (and sometimes a pump) needs somewhere to stand, and pedestrians still need a safe way past. We plan truck positioning ahead of time, use a traffic management plan where council recommends or requires one, and keep the footpath passable or clearly managed. If neighbours' driveways might be briefly affected, a friendly heads-up the day before goes a long way.

Ground conditions

We haven't found a published source on Glen Waverley's soils at suburb level, and we won't claim one. Wikipedia notes the land ranges from creek flats in the east to hillier country further west. Melbourne-wide geotechnical research shows soil reactivity can vary widely even within a single soil type. Slabs for homes and townhouses should therefore be built to a site-specific classification under AS 2870 and an engineer's design. Driveways and paths need a compacted base and good drainage whatever the soil.

Around Glen Waverley

Glen Waverley is bounded by Dandenong Creek and Jells Park to the east, Waverley Road and View Mount Road to the south-east, Ferntree Gully Road to the south, Blackburn Road to the west and Highbury Road to the north, with Springvale Road running through the middle. The Glen, the eleventh-largest shopping centre in Victoria, and the Kingsway dining strip form the suburb's centre, near the Monash Council building and Glen Waverley Library. The Glen Waverley railway station is the end of the line and a future Suburban Rail Loop interchange. The suburb is also home to the Victoria Police Academy, Glen Waverley Secondary College and Wesley College's boarding campus. Victoria's first McDonald's opened here in 1973. Jells Park, part of Parks Victoria's Dandenong Valley Parklands, lines the eastern edge.

Glen Waverley concreting FAQs

We don't publish prices, because every site is different. Size, access, removal of the old driveway, the crossover, stone choice and sealing all affect the cost. We provide a free, itemised quote after a site look.

Monash allows one crossing per residential property, and crossings within 2.4 metres of each other are treated as a double crossing. The final layout depends on your planning permit, frontage and the vehicle crossing permit.

No. Monash states that the Vehicle Crossing Permit is separate from any building or planning permit.

We'll advise based on the mix and weather. Monash re-inspects about a month after the pour, noting that concrete takes about that long to reach almost full strength. Keep heavy vehicles off until it has cured well.

If we can identify the original stone blend, we can get close. Weathering means an exact match is rare, and sealing both surfaces helps.
